Eden Project of the North

An £18m visitor attraction and hub for social enterprise looks set to be built in Blackburn. Dubbed the Eden Project of the North, Spice! was originally planned for Bradford until the city council decided it was not a priorityi. Subsequent discussions between project director Jan Smithies and Lancashire Economic Partnership led to a new site being identified off junction five of the M65. Spice! will celebrate spices and herbs throughout history with one of Europe’s biggest bazaars as its centrepiece. As well as creating around 250 jobs, it is expected to generate further employment through festivals and other events. But Spice!, a social enterprise itself, will also form a brand and marketing firm to help set up new social enterprises and community businesses.
