The Future of EU Competitiveness: From Economic Recovery to Sustainable Growth

The next decade will be critical in Europe’s economic history. Across Europe we will need to rebuild confidence in financial markets and recreate millions of jobs that have been destroyed by the recession. The demand that drives those jobs will have to be low carbon and built on a sustainable balance of exports and domestic spending. And all this will need to be done at a time when pressure on public and private finances will be huge.
This paper is intended as an initial contribution to the debate on the future of the real economy in the context of broader questions such as the successor to the Lisbon Strategy and ongoing work on financial services.
