Managing Projects

This event will be held at the YHA Manchester Potato Wharf, Castlefield, Manchester M3 4NB.
The aim of this course is to introduce and practise different approaches and techniques that can be used in defining, planning and managing fixed term projects. It is for those who are starting up or are in the first two years of a new project. Examples of projects include:

  • Turning an entirely new idea into a project;
  • Setting up a project within an organisation; and
  • Completing a funded project by a clear deadline.

Content

  • What is a project?
  • Setting the project up.Identifying outcomes, establishing feasibility, negotiating a clear brief.
  • The projects plan.Different approaches to planning, scheduling and monitoring.
  • Mapping it out.How can a project develop support from different interests?
  •  How can it avoid unrealistic aims and at the same time remain innovative?
  • Costing it. Approaches to costing a project. How can we work out what it really costs to operate?
  • Managing the project and project leadership.Cases studies will be used to look at some of the issues that need to be managed as a project develops. The main management challenges facing project leaders will be identified and worked on.
  • Developing an exit strategy.
  • Evaluating the project. Different techniques and approaches are outlined.
  • Living with projects.Increasingly funders are supporting fixed term projects rather than longer term core costs.
  • How the organisation can develop a shared and common approach to project management
