Project Profile 1: East Lancs into Employment

‘Tell the World’ Exhibition Opening Ceremony

ELE has been working with Community Groups in Burnley under Urban 2 European funding to publicise the work of their groups and to help them to ‘Tell the World’ what they are doing to improve their local communities. As the saying goes ‘a picture tells a thousand words’ So the groups were taught everything about digital photography to help them tell their stories or highlight their problems and show how they are dealing with them. Each group was given a digital camera on long-term loan with which to photograph their group’s activities. The member of the groups were then trained in digital photo techniques and in how to put together their own exhibition stand, using the photographs they had taken with the cameras and taught how to get their message across in a visual eye-catching format. The exhibition of the work of 10 community groups was opened on 20 July 2007 by his Worship the Mayor Of Burnley Peter McCann, together with the Mayoress Mary McCann, at East Lancs into Employment’s on-site art gallery ‘The Weaver’s Walk Gallery’. Entrance is free and is open on weekdays during office hours or by appointment. It runs until the end of August and all are welcome.

In his speech the Mayor praised the valuable work done in Burnley by Community Groups and organisations in the Voluntary Sector and commented on the high standard of exhibition displays they had produced via ‘Tell the World’ training provided by East Lancs into Employment. The Manager of East Lancs into Employment, Brenda Kean, who was the Tutor of the Course and who is a professional Travel Photographer herself said ‘Everyone has worked very hard and each group has used the exhibition to get across their own message. Some have highlighted their journey from how their communities used to be and how they are now and others have used the exhibition display to attract new members to take part in the activities they offer.
